Today’s point

You just read five plans in one story, and not one of them uses a future tense ending. That is the trick of ir a plus infinitive: voy a correr, vamos a ir al mercado, voy a empezar. English already has this exact shape ("I'm going to run"), so the meaning transfers for free, which is rare good news in Spanish grammar.

The trap is the little word English speakers drop: a. You cannot say voy correr, the a is not optional, it is part of the construction, glued to the verb. Also remember ir itself is irregular (voy, vas, va, vamos), never a regular verb ending.

Use ir a plus infinitive for plans and intentions, and never skip the a.

Your turn

  1. 1. ¿Qué van a comprar en el mercado del barrio esta mañana?

  2. 2. ¿Qué cita hay el jueves y cómo se siente el narrador antes de ir?
